Lymphoedema / Lipedema
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition that occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged or not functioning properly, leading to the accumulation of lymphatic fluid and swelling—most commonly in the arms or legs, but can effect anywhere in the body. It can be primary (due to genetic or developmental issues) or secondary, often resulting from cancer treatment, surgery, infection, or trauma. Early diagnosis and management are essential to prevent progression and complications. Therapists trained in lymphoedema management play a key role in care, using techniques such as manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy (bandaging or garments), skin care, exercise, and education. These treatments help reduce swelling, improve mobility, and support long-term management and quality of life.
