Vestibular Rehabilitation
- Vertigo, dizziness and balance disturbances
Vertigo and dizziness are common symptoms that can greatly affect your quality of life. Physiotherapists are involved in the management of certain types of problems that can cause vertigo and balance disorders.
These can include:
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
- A common inner ear complaint, where calcium carbonate crystals move about the semi circular canals, interrupting important signals to the brain regarding where your head is in space
- There are many different types of BPPV and our Physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat these
- Unilateral and Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction
- Often caused by a virus or a trauma, considered an ‘injury’ to the vestibular system
- Physiotherapy helps to rehabilitate your balance and vestibular systems
- Meniere’s disease and Vestibular Migraines
- Physiotherapy can assist with residual symptoms between attacks
- Post concussion syndrome
- Post vestibular surgery
- Cervicogenic dizziness
- Neck pain and stiffness can affect the proprioception (joint position sensors) that send signals to the brain
- Physiotherapy can help to restore neck range of movement and thus help with cervicogenic dizziness
There are many other conditions that vestibular rehabilitation can help with, however, we also work with your medical practitioner to rule out other causes of vertigo and dizziness.
